Duration : 1.5 Days

Theory : Thursday 18 July 2013 from 18:00 to 22:00
Practical : Saterday 20 July 2013 from 8:30 to 17:00

Venue : Theory : Jameson Ave 4, Welgemoed, Bellville ; Practical : Melkbos 4x4, 3km north from Melkbosstrand on the west coast road.

Cost : R1550.00 : Payable in advanced
Included : Full Training and Assessment, Use of 4x4 track, Lunch on the Saturday, Coffee/tea on the day of theory, Training Manual.

What to bring with :
2 x Certified Copies of ID ; 2x Certified Copies of Drivers License; 2 x Color Passport size Photos with name printed at the back ; 4x4 Vehicle ; Vehicle's Owner Manual ; Tyre Pressure gauge; 12V Tyre Pump ; Spare wheel; Wheel spanner; Gloves; Any recovery equipment you may have; 1.5 liter drinking water per person on Saturday; Refreshments on Saturday (picnic basket). Theory (3.5 hrs) :
ENGINES (Petrol vs Diesel, Power vs Torque, Fluid levels, Cooling and 4WD, Engine braking)
DIFFERENT 4WD CONFIGURATIONS ( AWD, Part Time, Full Time)
TRANSMISSIONS ( Drivetrain components & functions, Different 4WD configurations, Windup, Shift options)
SUSPENSIONS (Chassis, Springs, Axles, Suspensions, Articulation)
CONTROL SYSTEMS (Steering, Gearing, Accelerating, Braking, ABS, EBD, HDC, Anti-Stall, Traction Control, Difflocks)
TYRES ( Types, Markings, Recommended Pressures, Repair tools, Tyre repair)
4WD VEHICLES ( Range, Capabilities, Features, Limitations, Preparations, Controls, Product related training, Tools)
BASIC OFF- & ONROAD  DRIVING SKILLS ( Regulation, Gear selection , Route selection, Ascents, Descents, Cross-axles, Side slopes, Safety first approach, Water-crossings)
BASIC RECOVERY ( Recovery & Safety Equipment, Ratings and Purpose, Recovery Points, Self & Pull Recovery)

Vehicles :
Options, Power Sources, Range of features, Capabilities, Limitations (centre of gravity, approach angle, departure angle, brake-over angle, ground clearance, other dimensions), Control Systems (Brakes , ABS, ESC, TC, Anti Stall, HDC, Terrain Response Systems),Controls and Owner's Manual.
Preparation :  Fluid levels, Lights, Tyre Pressure, Tools, Recovery&Safety&Health Equipment, Safety Features.
Chassis & Suspension : Construction types, Springs (coil-, leaf-, air-,torsen bar), Shocks, Axles (solid-,independant-), Suspensions and Operating conditions
Drive train : 4WD configurations (Perm 4WD-, Part time 4WD, AWD), Clutch, Torque converter, Gearboxes (automatic, manual, semi-automatic), Transfer case, Propshaft, Axles, Final Drive, Side shafts, Locking Hubs (manual, auto)
Operating a 4WD : Regulation, Route selection, Gear selections, Using Difflocks, Driving obstacles (ascents, descents, rocks and rough terrain, water and mud, river crossings, sand driving, ditches and dongas, veld conditions, grass and cambers)

Non Driving Tasks (2.5 hrs) : to be performed by each candidate
Tyre Plug Repair (temporary through sidewall)
Spare wheel change
Deflating and inflating
Explain vehicle controls, use thereof in terms of Owner's Manual Instructions
Point out Identify recovery equipment and discuss purpose/ how to use
Checking fluid levels

Driving Tasks (4 hrs) : to be performed by each candidate
Perform a Reverse Stall
Perform an emergency stop - gravel road
Changing gears : H2 <==> H4 ; L <==> H;
Driving cross-axle demonstrating TC technique, better line, use of little momentum, use of locker.
Driving Sideways (22deg, both sides)
Driving an off-road track with various types of obstacles

Assignments : (own time)
(1) . Complete questionnaire about own vehicle
(2) . Plan a one-day trip

Homework : (own time)
Pre-reading Training Manual - all sections marked "B"
Complete assignments
Drive and log an off-road track with DriveOut Grading of 3 - (2 -3hrs minimum)

Final Assessment ( 2.5 hrs ) :
(Continuous evaluation and assessment will be done throughout the practical.)
