Venue : Theory : Jameson Ave 4, Welgemoed, Bellville ; Practical : Saturday : Melkbos 4x4, 3km north from Melkbosstrand on the west coast road; Sunday : Babylon's Toren

Included : Full Training and Assessment, Use of 4x4 track on 2 days, Lunch 2 days, Coffee/tea on the days of theory, Training Manual.

What to bring with :
Thursday 20 Jun 2013 : 3 x Certified Copies of ID ; 3x Certified Copies of Drivers License; 3 x Color Passport size Photos with name printed at the back ;
Saturday + Sunday : 4x4 Vehicle ; Vehicle's Owner Manual ; Tyre Pressure gauge; 12V Tyre Pump ; Spare wheel; Wheel spanner; Gloves; Any recovery equipment you may have; 1.5 liter drinking water per person on days in the veld. Refreshments for the days on the track (lunch will be served). Pen (black ink)

DIFFERENT 4WD CONFIGURATIONS ( AWD, Part Time, Full Time)
TRANSMISSIONS ( Drivetrain components & functions, Turbo- & Super chargers, Windup, Shift Options)
DIFFLOCKS ( Open Diff, Manual difflocks, Automatic,difflocks LSD, Torsen diff, Use of lockers, traction control)
POWER & TORQUE CALCULATIONS (difference, relation, drivetrain calculations in tractive+slipping conditions)
SUSPENSIONS (Chassis, Springs, Axles, Suspensions, Articulation)
CONTROL SYSTEMS (Steering, Gearing, Accelerating, Braking, ABS, EBD, HDC, Anti-Stall, Traction Control, Difflocks)
TYRES & RIMS (construction, Types, Markings, Tyre Pressures, Repair tools, Tyre repair, dynamic behaviour,inspection)

BASIC RECOVERY ( Recovery & Safety Equipment, Ratings and Purpose, Recovery Points, Self & Pull Recovery)
RECOVERY PROCEDURES ( Hand signals, Air- & Hi-lift Jack, Kinetic-, Winch Recovery, recovery forces, Safety, Special terrain dependant recovery techniques, Recovery Force Calculations and approximations )
(matching equipment ratings with actual scenarios; Winching, Snatching, Pulling, Strength of materials)
4X4 LIFESTYLE ( Etiquette, Camping and off-road activities, Tread Lightly, Camp site, Veld Toilet, Dangers in the wild )
LEAD A 4X4 EXPERIENCE (Trip preparation, Fuel calculation, Plan for Emergencies, Convoys, GPS & Mapreading - manual for self study only)

Non Driving Tasks (4hrs) : to be performed by each candidate
Explain vehicle controls, use thereof in terms of Owner's Manual Instructions
Off-road Vehicle Preparation (fuel levels, tyre pressure and inspection)
Tyre Plug Repair (through steel tread)
Operating an air jack
Operating a high lift jack
Operating a winch (double line)
Setup and Perform a Pull recovery
Setup and Perform a Snatch Recovery

Driving Tasks (8hrs) : to be performed by each candidate
4x4 Accesseries and Recovery Equipment
Perform an emergency stop on gravel road - correct technique
Gravel Road Driving (shift H2 <-> H4, swerve options)
Basic 4x4 Driving Skills + Advanced 4x4 Driving Skills
Perform a Reverse Stall
Driving cross-axle demonstrating (TC technique, better line, use of little momentum, use of locker)
Driving Sideways (25 - 30deg, both sides)
Driving a rocky patch (best line and high points, building your path if necessary)
Sand / Dune or muddy obstacle - rocking manoevre, momentum
Muddy/water obstacle
Drive the Babylon's Toren 4x4 Track

Assignments : (own time)
(1) . Complete questionnaire - own vehicle : off-road angles, features, configuration, equipment
(2) . Plan a 10 day 4x4 excursion, and list the after trip preparations

Homework : (own time)
Pre-reading Training Manual - all sections marked "A" and "B"
Complete assignments
Drive and log 3 off-road tracks with a DriveOut Grading of 3 -4  (2 -3hrs minimum per trip)

Final Assessment : ( 5 hrs)
(Continuous evaluation and assessment will be done throughout the practical.)
